The great jazz saxophonist John Coltrane once bemoaned, to the great jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, that he had difficulty ending a solo. The blunt advice from Davis, was for Coltrane to take the horn out of his mouth.
Like a John Coltrane saxophone solo, my usual 7 kilometre loop through Sherbrooke Forest became two and then three times up the big hill. Accompanied by a winter sun and with steam rising from the trunks of trees, I had run a half marathon and experienced some joy.
