King of Spain

The return of the King.

On Sunday, Alberto Contador (Saxo Tinkoff) won his second Vuelta crown. His great escape on Stage 17 and his solid TT, securing the win. Contador rode the race with passion and courage. When challenged and vulnerable, his spirit was strong.

Fellow countrymen, Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Joaquim “Purito” Rodriguez (Katusha), took the other podium places, making it a clean sweep for Spain. “Purito “again missing out on an overall grand tour win (he was second in the Giro).

The local  Australian rider (yes, he lives just down the road), Simon Clarke (Orica-GreenEdge) took the mountain jersey.

And on Sunday, we celebrated the Vuelta with friends, food and wine. On the menu, Spanish tortilla (potato & egg), manchego cheese (from La Mancha), croquettes and a Spanish empanada decorated with a bike.

We talked of the Vuelta and how we thought it the best of the grand tours this season. Of our children, Lance Armstrong and of travelling perhaps to see the Tour or the Vuelta next year.
